The environmental assessment report of the new Istanbul Canal obtained the approval and acceptance of the audit and evaluation committee of the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning, the report is around the corner.

The Environmental Assessment Report of Istanbul Canal is in its Final Stage

 

“Istanbul Canal project is a project that cannot be relinquished nor underestimated.” With these words, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke about the Canal project which will start soon, highlighting its importance and the willingness to move forward to make it come true.

After the environmental assessment report of the new Istanbul Canal obtained the approval and acceptance of the audit and evaluation committee of the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning; the committee referred the report to 55 institutions and departments for consideration, and the final decision is expected to be issued within the next few days.

 

The environmental assessment report is around the corner

The environmental assessment report deals with studying, identifying, and analyzing the project's effects on the surrounding environment, animals, and plants, and modifying the construction plans according to these effects so that no harm is inflicted on the environmental balance in the project location and its surroundings.

The final evaluation stage takes 10 days, after which the decision will be issued within 5 working days from the date of finishing the mentioned evaluation.

As part of preparing this report, research field studies were carried out along the course of the project, where the marine researches dealt with water runoff, temperature, salinity, pollution, and turbidity.

The land-specialized researches dealt with: the geological, geotechnical, geophysical, and hydrogeological values, as well as studying the risks of earthquake and tsunami on the region if the project was carried out, in addition to studies related to the positive and negative effects of the project and its consequences on freshwater sources in the surrounding environment, also the width of the canal path was determined based on the environmental effects.



Studying the path details of the new Istanbul Canal and its precautions

The environmental impact assessment report of the Istanbul Canal also included a detailed study about its path along with the main and backup roads, facilities, and harbors, such as Marmara Port, Kucukcekmece Port, Karadeniz Port, Karadeniz Center for logistical support, and others.

In addition to studying the potential environmental impacts of the project on Sazlıdere Dam, the supply lines of the General Directorate of Water and Sewerage, highways, railways, and communication and transportation networks.

The report also included an extensive study of the construction phase works, its possible effects on the surrounding environment, and the effects of modifying it through minimizing the damage of these effects as much possible.
